Halampangan Cafe Bar is a unique cafe in Bacolod City that offers delicious Malay, Thai, and Indonesian food in a fun and playful atmosphere. The name “Halampangan” means “toys” in the Ilonggo dialect, and the cafe is decorated with a wide variety of toys and statues, which are the personal collection of the owner.

The owner of Halampangan is Leo, a retiree who resembles the famous animator Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. Leo used to work for Sony Ericsson. He was assigned to various countries in Southeast Asia, where he fell in love with the cooking and various flavors of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. He decided to learn how to cook his favorite dishes from these countries.

Halampangan Cafe Bar has two menus. The new items are written on a chalkboard. Please note that the food here is spicy, but you can ask for the heat level to be turned down. If you are used to spicy food, ask for the heat level to be set to medium.

We ordered Beef Rendang, Nasi Goreng Kampung, Ayam Goreng, Spicy Cajun Shrimp Tortilla Wrap, and Tom Yum Goong Noodle Soup from Halampangan Cafe Bar. Everything was fantastic and yummy!

Here is a short tutorial on some of the dishes at Halampangan Cafe Bar.

For beginners, you can’t go wrong with the Ayam Goreng. Ayam Goreng is a popular Indonesian fried chicken dish that is made with a blend of spices and herbs. It is typically served with rice, Vegetables and a dipping sauce.

The Ayam Goreng at Halampangan Cafe Bar is served with the owner’s homemade sambal sauce, which is very tasty. Sambal is made with a blend of chili peppers.

One of the highly recommended dishes at Halampangan Cafe Bar is their Tom Yum Goong noodle soup.

Tom Yum Goong is a hot and sour Thai soup made with shrimp, lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, chili peppers, and fish sauce. Halampangan Cafe also includes squid in their version of the soup. The soup is spicy but has a lemony flavor due to the kaffir lime leaves. It is absolutely delicious!

If you like fried rice you’re in for a treat. Order Halampangan Cafe Bar’s Nasi Goreng Kampung. – It’s a Malaysian dish that translates to “Village fried rice”.

One order of fried rice is enough for three people. It comes with anchovies, your choice of meat, and shrimp. Garnishings on the side include shrimp crackers (kropek) and sliced cucumbers.

We chose chicken for our fried rice, which we chose to have a mild spicy flavor. Mild spicy is just right for those new to spicy food. Leo, the owner, recommended that we eat the cucumbers as a palate cleanser. The cucumbers refreshed our mouths and somewhat cut the spicy taste. This dish is super tasty!

Nasi Goreng Kampung

Another popular dish at Halampangan Cafe Bar is beef rendang. Beef rendang is a rich and tender coconut beef stew with spices. It is very delicious, especially when paired with the nasi goreng kampung (village fried rice). We highly recommend this.

Besides the food, another draw of Halampangan Cafe is the toy collection. There’s one entire room devoted to the owners collection of toys busts and statues.

The collection contains items from Marvel, DC and all of comic fandom.

Kids will love the owners special lego collection with lots of rare minifigures.

Come for the food, stay for the toys! Kids will love exploring the toy collection, and adults will appreciate the nostalgia.
