About Rau Ram Cafe

Rau Ram Cafe was previously known as Saigon Cafe. The owner, Sylvia Gerangue, ran the restaurant out of her backyard. Sylvia had previously gone to Vietnam to learn how to cook Vietnamese food. She brought back to Bacolod the Vietnamese dishes and recipes.

This is a picture of Rau Ram Cafe over 10 years ago. They just ran the restaurant out of their garage.

Since Filipino and Vietnamese palates are somewhat similar, Rau Ram Cafe was a hit and customers began to queue up to try their food. Soon, they were able to save enough money to open a bigger restaurant just across from their house.

Over 10 years later, Rau Ram has expanded their menu and now has gorgeous outdoor areas for visitors to enjoy while they dine.

There’s a fountain area and miniature bonsai trees for sale at Rau Ram cafe.

It is decorated with whimsical glass bottle lamps and fans, and has large, long tables that can accommodate big groups. The second dining area is located on a veranda next to the main dining area. There are plenty of nets to provide shade and block the sun, and there are plenty of fans to ensure a nice cooling breeze.

What to order at Rau Ram Cafe Bacolod

We ordered Rau Ram Cafe Bacolod’s Guoi Buoi pomelo salad as an appetizer. The fresh pomelo gave the salad a big burst of flavor. Pomelo is a delicious and refreshing fruit, and it pairs perfectly with the other ingredients in the salad. The combination of the sweet and sour flavors is really invigorating, and the herbs add a touch of freshness.

One of Rau Ram’s famous salads is the Vietnamese noodle salad, also known as Bun Thit Nuong. We chose to have their famous Bun Chia Go, which is made with delicious deep-fried spring rolls wrapped in rice paper. We highly recommend it. This is the dish you should order when you are at Rau Ram Cafe.

Want fried chicken? Rau Ram Cafe Bacolod has Ga Chien, Vietnamese Five Spice fried chicken paired with their special fried rice. Tasty! Ga Chien, or Vietnamese Five Spice fried chicken, is a popular dish in Vietnam. It is made with chicken that has been marinated in a mixture of five spice powder, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce. The chicken is then fried until crispy and golden brown. Ga Chien is often served with rice, vegetables, and a dipping sauce.

We always order the Vietnamese Braised Short Ribs or their Suon Kho Man at Rau Ram Cafe Bacolod. These sweetish stewed ribs are very tasty and filling. Make sure to order plenty of rice!

Grilled balut has been trending lately in the Philippines. However, the tastiest balut in Bacolod is the one that Rau Ram Cafe Bacolod serves, which is balut with sweet chili sauce. It is delicious and worth trying.

Rau Ram’s Pork Belly in plum sauce is a dish that mixes several delicious flavors – sweet, sour and meaty.

Rau Ram Cafe Bacolod was also the first restaurant in Bacolod to popularize Vietnamese coffee. It was the first time for many to see the phin filter, a device used by Vietnamese to make drip coffee. Vietnamese coffee is still a popular drink at Rau Ram today. The coffee is filtered into a glass with condensed milk then poured over a glass filled with ice cubes. Tasty!
